BACK TO SCHOOL KUWAIT 2026: A FRESH START FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

A CHALLENGING ACADEMIC YEAR

The previous academic year was disrupted by regional tensions. From around the end of February until the end of the academic term in May, students experienced interruptions to regular classroom learning.

Classroom learning resumed for higher-secondary students on May 3, 2026, for approximately one month before schools closed for the summer break. Some schools and preschools also attempted online learning, although keeping younger children engaged through screens proved particularly challenging.

The disruption meant that children missed many of the everyday experiences of school—not only academic lessons, but also playing with friends, communicating, becoming independent and developing important social skills.

SCHOOLS PREPARE FOR A RETURN TO NORMAL

With the new term approaching, government and private schools in Kuwait are expected to return to regular in-person learning for all grade levels, following Ministry of Education guidelines.

Full classroom attendance is expected, although there may initially be adjustments to school hours for some lower-secondary classes, with further details expected from the Ministry.

For students and parents, the return to school brings an opportunity to restore a more familiar and structured routine.

HELPING CHILDREN GET READY

After a long period away from school, getting children back into a routine may take some preparation. During the break, many children become accustomed to later bedtimes, longer screen time and less structured days.

Parents can make the transition easier by gradually adjusting sleeping schedules, reducing late-night screen time and reintroducing regular morning and evening routines before school begins.

It is equally important to prepare children emotionally. Encourage them to talk about what they are looking forward to, as well as anything that may make them nervous about returning.

PREPARING FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR

Parents also have plenty to organise, from uniforms, schoolbags, stationery and books to transportation and daily schedules. Starting preparations early can reduce last-minute stress and help children feel more confident about returning.

Involving children in preparing their school supplies and organising their study space can also make them feel excited and responsible for the new school year.

The return to regular classroom learning will hopefully bring a sense of normalcy for children and families across Kuwait. School is not only about academics; it is also where children build friendships, confidence, independence and important life skills.

Provided regional conditions remain stable, schools can look forward to supporting students through their academic and extracurricular activities as usual.
